What distinguishes Safina from other orphanages is that it isn't just a conglomerate of rooms.Safina tries to cater to the childrens' emotional and physical needs; love and attention which all children desire.Incorporating leisurely activities such as T.V time and movie day and so on.This summer Safina is introducing computers for the children to enhance their abilities ensuring they are well rounded citizens at par with OUR kids .I say Our kids because unfortunately as a society, as a group we do differentiate whatever the reason may be.However I can tell you this: they are naughty, lovable, mature, playful, loud, sometimes silent :in other words just like any other child.
Credit for the encouragement, enthusiasm and work put into Safina goes largely to Razia Rajab Ali and her husband Iqbal Rajab Ali. Their spirit and capacity to keep working just blows you away and whats more important is their consistency and persistence.
Volunteers did many things from checking the repainting of the house which was covered in a lovely warm yellow sunshine paint that Razia Rajab Ali had made herself. Then there were volunteers who were in charge of inspection and the overseeing of maintenance. This was all done so that the children could enjoy the atmosphere of a home and not just a four walled house.
There is just so much joy in witnessing a collective effort being done for someone else, when you know there are going to be beaming smiles replacing frowns and eyes that cry silently at night will be soothed for a while.
The Holy Quran reminds us," They ask thee what they should spend (In charity). Say: Whatever ye spend that is good, is for parents and kindred and orphans and those in want and for." (2:215)
To stand for justice for Orphans,"…. As also concerning the children who are weak and oppressed: that ye stand firm for justice to orphans. There is not a good deed which ye do, but God is well-acquainted therewith." (4:127).
Their curious fingers will trace the flowers on the wall and want to fly wth the butterflies and open up a world of dreams to them. We can't change what happened, we can only change their circumstances and hope that it contributes towards a positive change in their lives.
